“I started studying Computer Systems & Networks in Mallow College of Further Education in 2017. I was coming from a Level 4 Employments Skills 4M0857 which I completed in Mannix College, Charleville, instead of the traditional Leaving Certificate.
On a day-to-day basis, Mallow College worked well and for me. The structure was easy to follow and it made it easy to learn. Our course coordinator and teachers guided us through our assignment workload and I think this was an important part of the journey to success.
Studying Computer Systems & Networks I learned the fundamentals of object-oriented programming, computer hardware, networks, database, Linux operating system administration, maths, as well as a lot about IT and the IT industry. When a guest speaker from Poppulo spoke to us about the systems in use in his company, and what they do and how they help other companies, it put our classroom learning into perspective as directly relevant to real-world systems.
Overall my personal experience of my year at Mallow College was excellent. The teachers were amazing. All the staff were amazing and helpful. The experience is more than just what we learn in the classroom. My participation on the Erasmus trip to Exeter over Easter holidays, for example, helped me to further improve my communication, analytical and creativity skills on two weeks work placement.
I know too that my personality grew and matured while at Mallow College. I feel like I came out of my shell, found my voice, and started to express my opinions more.
My plan for the future after Computer Systems & Networks was to keep going with my education – hopefully in University College Cork. From start to finish, Mallow College’s guidance counsellor was amazing in helping me get organised with what I needed to do for the CAO application.
With my QQI award points, I got my first choice in the CAO offers: Business Information Systems (BIS) in UCC.
I got there with the help of Mallow College of Further Education and their amazing team of teachers.”
